Lucs beat the cold - and the opposition

Luctonians’ efforts of covering their pitch with fleece during the cold spell were rewarded when they romped to a 35-3 victory at Mortimer Park against a committed but out-gunned Nuneaton side.

This was the only game in the league to be played due to the weather.

The home side started strongly and within three minutes debutant blindside Barney Woods broke through the opposing defence to score near the posts with John Morris adding the simple conversion.

A further period of pressure failed to bring a further score.  The Nuns gradually worked their way up field and eventually won a penalty which was duly converted by scrum half Huw Thomas. Lucs should have increased their lead but Morris put a straightforward penalty wide of the posts.

The home pack then lost possession when close to the line allowing Nuns to race up field only to be stopped on the Lucs 22 metre line by a last ditch tackle.

A period of stalemate then ensued with Nuneaton producing some strong forward drives with No 6 Andrew Dockray leading from the front. Luctonians gradually resumed control and two tries in the closing minutes of the half gave the home side a healthy 21 – 3 lead.

Both tries came from flowing three-quarter play, the first when winger Morris came into the line for a fine individual try and then another when debutant winger Alex Rumsey sprinted clear to score. Morris converted both with fine kicks from near the touch line.

The home side continued to press after the break and were rewarded with a bonus point try when, following a lineout maul near the line, lock Alex Davidson forced his way over in the corner. Morris added the extra points.

The visitors then had a good period of play gaining plenty of possession but were unable to break through a resolute defence.  Lucs stretched their lead further when after several passing movements No 8 Paul Hulland breached the defensive line to score a trademark try near the posts.

Brett Prior who had earlier replaced Morris slotted the easy conversion.

Nuneaton spent the closing stages in the home sides 22 but were unable to break down the Lucs defence.
