Second loss in a row for Hereford

Hereford Rugby Club fell to their second defeat in as many matches when they went down narrowly at home to Peterborough 25-22.

The home side started at a furious tempo and after several strong phases of play the Wyesiders were in for the first try of the day through winger Morgan Goodall.

Peterborough took control of the game through the use of some neat tactical kicking close to the Hereford line.

After conceding a close range lineout, Peterborough set up a rolling maul allowing prop Michael Cade to cross for a try.

Scrum-half Mike Hogan took the lead for the visitors with a successful conversion.

The home team continued to struggle to clear the ball from their own half and conceded a penalty which Hogan converted.

Hereford went further behind when another loose kick saw winger Pete Goodley diving over in the corner for an unconverted try.

Goodall reduced the deficit with a 40 metre penalty after Peterbough had been caught infringing at the breakdown but unfortunately for the Wyesiders, the visitors struck back immediately.

Fullback Ben Chan burst through the home defence from an attacking line out and Hogan added the conversion to extend their lead yet further.

The introduction of replacements Ben Hillstead, Richard Preece and Eric Rabuka after the interval seemed to have the desired effect for Hereford, who started the second period with purpose.

The Wyesiders enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but desperate Peterbough defence close to their own line prevented the home side from scoring several times.

Hereford did break the line midway through the half when winger James Watters burst through to score near the posts to set up  a tense finish.

The home team closed the gap further with two more long range successful penalties from Morgan with 15 minutes left.

However, prop Hillstead was yellow carded for an infringement at the ruck and Hogan kicked the penalty to increase Peterborough’s lead to 25-19.

Goodall did kick another long range penalty but time ran out for the home team.

This Saturday Hereford must travel to Luton, who have also lost their first two league games of the season.
