Two people are dead and another is injured following a weekend of carnage on Herefordshire’s roads.
The deceased, an 18-year-old man and a woman in her 70s, were involved in two separate incidents in the south of the county on Friday evening.
The first incident involved a car and a pedestrian at 9.30pm on the B4229 at Goodrich when a woman, who was with her husband and a friend, was hit by a Citroen Picasso.
Paramedics rushed to the scene, and transferred the woman to hospital but she was later confirmed dead.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “The ambulance crew arrived to find an injured woman lying on the grass verge being cared for by passers by.
“The woman sustained multiple injuries after reportedly being in collision with a car.”
He added that ambulance crews began emergency treatment on scene before transferring her by ambulance to Hereford County Hospital while treatment continued en route.
“Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the ambulance crew and hospital medics, nothing could be done to save the woman and she was confirmed dead later at hospital.”
The driver of the Picasso was unhurt.
Police Inspector Dave Perridge, from Force Operations Support Team, said: “The incident happened just before 9.30pm on Friday night in a rural location so it would have been dark but there may still be witnesses who haven’t yet come forward and spoken to police.”
The road was closed after the incident and re-opened at around 3am.
The second incident happened at around 11.20pm on Friday on the B4348 near Peterchurch when a Vauxhall Corsa was in an accident with a John Deere tractor, towing a baler.
A Fiat Punto was also thought to be involved.
The victim, a front seat passenger in the Corsa, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver was taken to hospital.
The tractor driver was not injured, neither was the driver of the Punto.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “One man suffered multiple fatal injuries and was confirmed dead at the scene.
“A second man, believed to be 18 years old, sustained neck and chest injuries in the crash. Crews treated the man at the scene, immobilising him with a neck collar and spinal board, before taking him to Hereford County Hospital.”
The road was closed for a number of hours before eventually being re-opened to traffic the following morning.
Anyone with information about either incident is urged to contact police on 0300 333 3000.
