Top six spot is Hereford target

Faced with their second season in National Three Midlands, Hereford Rugby Club chairman Guy Griffiths says the team can only get better.

After gaining promotion the previous season, the Wyesiders enjoyed a solid campaign last term, finishing in a creditable eighth position and easily avoiding relegation.

Now established back at the top of the regional game, Griffiths feels that the foundations have been built to enable the club to make further progress.

“I think we’ll be up there,” he said. “The players have improved and the coaches have improved so we can only get better really.”

Griffiths said that players had been training throughout the summer and, although recruitment has been difficult, several additions to the squad have been made.

He maintains that last season was an important one and the Wyesiders must not forget what has been learned.

He added: “I think the main lessons are not to go back to the old ways of playing. It’s a modern game and we have to adapt to it.”

The Wyesiders start their campaign on Saturday with a difficult trip to Shropshire rivals Newport.

But, according to Griffiths, there is no reason not to aim high.

He added: “We’re going to have some hard games but we should have some games that we can win – our aim is to be in the top six really.”

Meanwhile, plans for the club’s proposed new development at Hampton Park Road is set for submission to Herefordshire Council on September 13.
