Lack of goals a worry for Bulls’ boss

Hereford United’s slump in form continued at the weekend when they went down to a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Rotherham at Edgar Street.

It was their second League Two loss in as many games, but more alarmingly for boss Simon Davey, the Bulls have only scored one goal in their four league outings.

The fact that the Bulls’ single strike came on the opening day against Crewe, scored by central defender Janos Kovacs, will probably be of just as much concern.

Saturday’s defeat seemed to be symptomatic of the problem, with the Bulls enjoying a glut of chances during the game but unable to convert any of them.

Kovacs had a good chance to open the scoring early on, but his solid header was well saved by Rotherham stopper Andy Warrington.

Disaster struck for the Bulls just before half time when veteran Millers striker Paul Warne guided his header into the back of the net from a chipped cross from Adam Le Fondre.

Warrington denied Sean Canham moments after the restart by blocking his powerful shot while Joe Colebeck’s effort was ruled out for offside.

United continued to dominate and were unlucky not to equalise when Stuart Fleetwood wasted a golden opportunity when through on goal, producing a weak effort.

O’Neil Thompson then dragged his effort wide after an ugly goalmouth scramble while Canham found himself in the book for grabbing the ball after being bundled down in the area.

The breakthrough looked to have come late on when Colebeck’s speculative cross found James McQuilkin but Warrington was on hand to stop the diminutive midfielder’s effort with his legs.

United’s problems finishing in front of goal will be Davey’s main concern ahead of their clash at Burton on Saturday.

The Bulls boss was unavailable for comment yesterday and despite the ending of the current transfer window, Davey was not thought to be pursuing any players.

The loan market does remain an option for the former Barnsley manager, although the availability of strikers remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Davey has been busy adding to his backroom staff and last week brought in former West Brom and Derby stopper Russell Hoult as the club’s goalkeeping coach. Hoult, 37, was released from Notts County in May after failing to establish himself as the first choice keeper at Meadow Lane.
