Westfields wins in Cup tie

An injury time goal from defender Scott Jackson handed Westfields a 1-0 win at Boldmere St Michael’s to see them through to the next round of the FA Cup.

The result earns ‘Fields a home tie with Shropshire side Market Drayton in the competition’s preliminary round on  August 28.

The teams had been locked at 0-0 for the duration of the match before Westfields won a free kick on the left flank following a foul on Jamie Addis.

Mark Hibbard’s free kick was flicked on by Daryl Addis to the unmarked Scott Jackson, who coolly slotted the ball home at the far post for the match winner when a replay looked certain.

Both teams had suffered from a distinct lack of scoring chances although Westfields could have opened the scoring in the opening 45 minutes but Daryl Addis’ 20-yard shot ballooned over the bar.

Strong-tackling defender Gareth Thomas had earlier prevented Boldmere from profiting by producing two excellent tackles on the home strikers.

Visiting keeper Jamie Moore was twice forced into action by saving a couple of long-range efforts from the home attack.

After the interval Westfields’ Jamie Addis appeared to have put Westfields ahead when he tucked away a shot from 12 yards only for his brother Daryl to be judged offside.

Boldmere were then thwarted by a superb save by Moore who produced a instinctive reaction stop to deny Stuart Capaldi when he was clear in front of goal.

Fine tackling from Westfields defenders Thomas and Joel Edwards kept the Boldmere attack at bay before Jackson struck with just seconds on the clock remaining.

On Saturday Westfields host Staffordshire side Rocester (3pm).

Meanwhile, the club have been selected to host the HFL League Shield final on Wednesday August 25 between Leominster Town and Ewyas Harold. The game kicks off at allpay.park at 7pm.
