Davey aims to boost squad to 20

Hereford United boss Simon Davey has been working to increase his squad to about 20 players.

Among new faces to be added to the playing staff are  young striker Sam Malsom, experienced Cheltenham defender Michael Townsend and former Inverness midfielder Daniel Stratford.

Davey has also captured the signature of midfielder Sam Gwynne, who was released by former boss Graham Turner at the end of last season.

“I am looking to add six or seven more players to our squad and will continue our build-up to real peak condition when we open our League Two programme,” he revealed in his pre-season programme notes.

“It is a rough tough division to get out off.

“Ideally, the aim is to get promotion to League One within the next couple of seasons.

“I have been given the budget to put together a competitive squad and my staff and I are putting in110 per cent effort.”

Bulls fans cheered Davey, who paraded strikers Stuart Fleetwood and Sean Canham, keeper Dan Connor, defender Jason Kovacs and Jamaican international utility man O’Neil Thompson in the 2-0 home win over Championship side Swansea last Tuesday.

On target for the Bulls were midfielder James McQuilkin and former Notts County striker Canham in front of a 1,568-strong crowd.

New signing Stratford got the Bulls’ goal in the 4-1 home defeat against last season’s Division One play off finalists Swindon Town on Friday.

With so many new signings, newly-contracted players may take some time to bed down under the watchful eye of Davey and assistant Andy Fensome.

Serious pre-season injury has, so far, been kept at bay.

Davey told fans in the programme: “I’ve played in this division, so know the level of fitness and style of play required.”

He added: “Although Notts County were last season’s League Two champions, in my opinion Rochdale were the outstanding side and set the benchmark to be be successful.”

Hereford United’s final pre-season outing is at Lydbrook United FC tomorrow (Thursday).

They were playing at supporter-owned Conference North side AFC Telford last night.

Their Division Two campaign kicks off with an away trip to Crewe Alexander on Saturday, August 7, followed by two home games in quick succession.

They take on Colchester in Carling Cup round one on Tuesday, August 10, and Gillingham in the league on Saturday, August 14.

On the commercial front, hospitality rooms are being refurbished at Edgar Street, sponsorship packages launched and incentives planned to attract families.

Summer soccer school details for Hereford, Ledbury, Leominster and Ross are available on www.herefordunited.co.uk or from the club office.

The club is also looking to recruit safety stewards and gate operators on match days. Anyone interested can email safety officer Steve Thomas at safety@hereforunited.co.uk
