Villagers appeal for road calming

Bridstow Parish Council has renewed calls for a safe pedestrian route between the village and Ross-on-Wye.

It wants Herefordshire Council to listen to overwhelming support for change within the local community.

“The reality is that few pedestrians and cyclists attempt crossings because they are aware of the dangers,” writes Councillor Russell Hamilton in a letter to Ross Town Council.

Although Bridstow has its own church, primary school and village hall, he added, it has no other amenities and its natural link was to Ross-on-Wye for leisure, business and other activities.

“The absence of a safe pedestrian route, near the Wilton roundabout on the A40 and A49 at the Bannuttree Lane junction, leads to social exclusion and isolation.

“It is particularly damaging for younger and older people who strive to gain and retain their independence and for those who experience disability.”

He added that people were tempted to get in their cars to conduct any business they have away from Ross, which will add to the carbon footprint.

Lack of progress only served to highlight the discrepancy between the treatment of motorised road users versus pedestrians and cyclists, he added, giving priority to those who passed through the community at the expense of local people.

The parish council had campaigned on road safety for pedestrians and cyclists for many years without satisfactory outcome, he said, and would not be giving up.

Any reference to studies such as one carried out in 2005 was unlikely to provide any meaningful information, he said.
