Repairs ahead for Mr Granger sculpture

Leominster’s jolly giant is in a bad way, the town council has been told, and expert help is being sought to put him back on his feet.

With aspirations for gold in this summer’s Heart of England in Bloom awards, Herefordshire Council’s parks’ department is taking a look at poorly Mr Granger, the 12ft ‘hanging basket’ whose striding metal figure has been cutting a dash on the Grange for the past five years.

Elsewhere, Leominster in Bloom is gearing up with plans for barrels, hanging baskets and barrier baskets all over town.

Councillor Pauline Davies gave a positive report to the town council, adding that the Saverne roses, from Leominster’s twin town in France, were to be planted and that thanks to the new enforcement officer there was no litter in Leominster.

A shop window competition is to be held once again, and three judges will decide on the winning displays on July 19.

Meanwhile, Mr Granger could be in for a spot of surgery before he’s back on the road to recovery. “The rot has gone right through him, so it looks as though he’ll have to be dismantled,” said Councillor Davies.

She added that a flower bed was to be made around him with trailing ivy.
