Racecourse stand named after businessman

Hereford Racecourse’s grandstand will be named after a pioneering county businessman and soldier on Saturday.

It will coincide with Cargill Meats Europe’s 50th anniversary family fun day marking a day of celebration in the history of Hereford’s biggest private employer, formerly known as Sun Valley.

The day will see the racecourse’s grandstand sponsored by the company and named the Colonel Corbett Grandstand in the presence of the late Colonel Corbett’s family, directors of Cargill and the Mayor of Hereford Councillor Anna Toon.

Lieutenant-Colonel Uvedale Corbett CBE, DSO was one of a consortium of Herefordshire farmers who founded Sun Valley Poultry in 1960.

He died in 2005 just 11 days short of what would have been his 96th birthday.

Cargill Meats Europe  has been part of Cargill’s global food group for 30 years as a leading supplier of food products to retail, food service and food manufacturing customers in both European and global markets.

After the company’s acquisition by Cargill in 1980, Colonel Corbett, a keen follower of horse racing, stayed on as chairman of the business until he retired in 1983.

He was president of the British Poultry Federation from 1979 to 1984 and appointed CBE for his work for the industry in 1984.

Richard Holland, general manager of Hereford Racecourse, said: “We are delighted to give the warmest of welcomes to the directors of Cargill and the families of so many of their staff, along with the Corbett family and the Mayor of Hereford.

“It is a great thrill to join in Cargill’s day of celebration in Hereford and we are pleased to be playing our part in that.

“The company and the racecourse have been close partners for many years, and it is a fitting occasion to announce the new sponsorship of our grandstand after the late Colonel Corbett.”

Saturday’s event is a private event for Cargill and their employees and families and is not open to the general public.
