Clampdown pays off for council

Clamping down on anti-social behaviour such as fly-tipping and littering is paying off, according to Herefordshire County Council.

The community protection team has dealt with more than 1,300 reports  in the past six months.

Out of these, 548  related to fly-tipping, 122 to abandoned vehicles, 39 to litter, 18 to fly-posting, 14 to graffiti, 500 on dog-related issues and 146 similar complaints.

So far, there had been  four prosecutions and convictions, one formal caution, two formal written warnings, 82 warning or advisory letters issued and 32 fixed penalty notices issued.

Regulatory services manager Shane Hancock said: “Fly-tipping is a particular focus for the team because of the detrimental impact on the environment and the cost of  removal. I am pleased that there has been an 11 per cent reduction in reported incidents over the last year.”

He added: “We have already secured four prosecutions for fly-tipping and are actively investigating a number of other incidents. We will not hesitate to take action in the future against anybody caught committing this anti-social offence.”

“Littering and dog fouling are other areas we have targeted,” he added.
