Trewick is sacked

Just over 48 hours after their 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Macclesfield, Hereford United sacked manager John Trewick.

Trewick, who took the manager’s role last year, will be replaced in the short term by long serving chairman Graham Turner.

The decision was made public on Monday after Trewick made a statement on the club website following an ‘amicable’ meeting. It read: “I was given the reasons behind the decision, which I understand and accept.

“This season was always going to be a time of readjustment and stabilisation. After a poor start and inconsistent results, the season turned out just as difficult and challenging as I thought it might be following relegation last season.

“I don’t believe, given all the recent circumstances, that too much more could have been achieved.

“I sincerely hope with Graham Turner taking over it instills the all round belief that the club can finish in a more comfortable position.”

Trewick, a former Newcastle United and West Brom midfielder, has been at Edgar Street as a coach since 2004 but was made manager in April last year.

But he has enjoyed a stormy tenure during a season of poor results and inconsistent performances.

Apparent unrest amongst fans at Trewick’s selection policy and tactics was displayed when just 1,266 turned out to watch last month’s home defeat to Northampton – the lowest crowd in the club’s history.

The Bulls sit just 11 points clear of the League Two relegation zone and have crashed to five defeats in their last seven league games.

Saturday’s defeat at home to Macclesfield was an emotionally-charged affair after the sudden death in midweek of Silkmen manager Keith Alexander.

A minute’s silence was held before the kick off with the Macclesfield players’  shirts printed with Rest in Peace Gaffa on the backs.

Goals from Ricky Sappleton and Emil Sinclair were enough to secure the three points and condemn the Bulls to their third home defeat in as many matches.

Caretaker boss Turner will have his work cut out ahead of Friday’s trip to Lincoln. The Imps are just eight points clear of the drop zone and held high-flying Rotherham a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

He will also need to sort out a contractual issue with midfielder Kenny Lunt.

It is believed that the 30-year-old’s contract stipulates that if he plays another game for the Bulls he could be automatically in line for another one-year deal.
