Breakfast bangers at a North Herefordshire farm shop are simply oozing with success having been judged to be best in the west.
The family-run Quarry Farm Shop at Nordan near Leominster has scooped top prize for the Tastiest Breakfast Sausage in the West Midlands after a hotly contested grand final last week.
The farm shop managed to lick the opposition at a county sizzle off - one of six events held in Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Warwickshire and Birmingham and Black Country as well as Herefordshire - going head to head at the finals in the flagship AGA store in the Mailbox, Birmingham.
“I’m overjoyed to have won,” said Richard Jones, who runs the farm shop while stock on the family farm are managed by his brother, Lewis.
Though Quarry Farm’s breakfast pork sausage has been crowned with success, sausage-making is just a small part of the shop’s output.
“I’m pleased for the shop, after 10 years in business and with the recession it’s great to have this vote of confidence to know we’re producing a good product.
“The sausage-making is just a small part of what we do so hopefully this will be the start of even better things.”
The annual competition is run by Heart of England Fine Foods, the regional food group for the West Midlands in association with AGA.
Another county enterprise, Mannings based in Bromyard, was selected as winner of the West Midlands Tastiest Breakfast Juice competition with its Jonagored juice.
Said James Manning: “We’re delighted to achieve this award. For a young business like us, this is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the very best of what we have to offer.”
Jus, Ledbury, was commended in the same category for its Discovery juice and also commended in the Tastiest Juice – cox variety category.
The West Midlands competition was devised in 2001 to coincide with Farmhouse Breakfast Week, a promotion run by the Home Grown Cereals’ Authority to highlight the variety and taste of breakfast products.
