Hundreds mourn fallen soldier

Hundreds lined the route from RAF Lyneham for Hereford’s Daniel Cooper and his fellow soldier, Peter Aldridge from Folkestone, both killed last week in Afghanistan.

They were there to honour the two young soldiers repatriated to the UK on Friday.

L/Cpl Cooper, from Hinton, was the 251st British soldier to die in the conflict.

There was also a Royal presence in Wiltshire on Friday when Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, paid their respects at  Wootton Bassett  war memorial.

They  praised local people for their devotion to the armed services and both laid wreaths.

L/Cpl Cooper, aged 21, of 3rd Battalion the Rifles, and Rifleman Aldridge were killed in separate explosions in Helmand Province.

The Herefordshire soldier, the fourth to be killed from the county, died on January 24 as he was leading a supply patrol south of the Sangin district.

Their coffins were  driven through Wootton Bassett amidst deeply emotional scenes as their families and friends wept and comforted each other.

Among them were L/Cpl Cooper’s parents Karl and Caroline, of Hinton, who had earlier described him as a caring son, brother and partner, adding: “Daniel we were proud to be your parents from the day you were born.”

A date for his funeral in Hereford is yet to be set. A Ministry of Defence spokesman said that this would depend on how long the coroner took to carry out protocol procedures.
