Hereford United boss John Trewick has admitted that his side face some crucial matches over the coming month if they are to avoid relegation.
Speaking before last night’s home clash with Lincoln, the United manager also pinpointed the importance of winning their home games.
He said: “We have to pick up our share of points to put ourselves in a reasonably secure position in the league.
Everyone is aware of what we have to do. It’s quite simple, we’ve got to get our heads down and do it to the best of our ability. As each game goes by without getting a result it becomes more difficult. The home games we’ve got are fairly crucial.”
Monday’s transfer deadline passed quietly at Edgar Street with former Hereford defender Tony James snubbing an approach from the Bulls.
Burton reportedly rejected a £10,000 bid for the 31-year-old centre-half, who opted to stay with the Brewers by signing an extension to his contract.
“It just wasn’t something I could discard lightly,” James told the Burton Mail.
“I was weighing the convenience of playing for a club close to home against playing for a club where I’m really enjoying my football.
“I’m playing well, enjoying being with these lads and we’re having a good season.
“Hereford are struggling a bit but Burton are moving forward and I want to be a part of that.”
James’ decision to stay in Staffordshire will no doubt be a blow for Trewick, who has spoken of his frustration at being unable to attract new players.
Saturday’s defeat at Port Vale will no doubt have heaped more misery on the Bulls manager.
A ninth minute goal from Craig Davies went with a late half strike from Marc Richards to secure a 2-0 win for the home side and condemn Hereford to their fifth defeat in six league matches.
Both Vale’s Lewis Haldane and Hereford’s Ryan Valentine saw red for two bookable offences, meaning Valentine will be unavailable for Saturday’s vital home clash with Torquay.
There is some good news for Trewick, with X-rays revealing that midfielder Jamie Tolley, who was forced to leave the field against Vale, has not suffered a fractured leg.
The former Shrewsbury player has bruising to the shin and is expected to miss the match with the Gulls.
