Happy returns for Westfields

Westfields recorded their first Midlands Alliance league double of the season when they celebrated their 43rd anniversary with an exciting 3-2 home win over visiting Causeway United at allpay.park to hoist themselves up to seventh in the league table.

Westfields, formed in November 1966 just a goal kick away on Widemarsh Common, served up a fine second-half display for the brave supporters who had defied the driving rain to witness a hard-working display for the side’s third consecutive home win in the   Alliance.

Having won 1-0 away at Causeway earlier in the season, Westfields got off to a cracking start. Daniel Moon missed a great chance when he headed over the bar from six yards then Daryl Addis had a chance but he too saw his effort saved by the visiting keeper as Westfields opened up well. It was against the run of play when the visitors took the lead in the 10th minute.

Debut signing Darren Andrews was penalised for a high challenge on Stuart How and the ref awarded a harsh penalty which How converted to put the visitors ahead.

Westfields kept pushing forward in an effort to draw level in the relentless rain and Danny Moon twice wasted good opportunities from set plays as Westfields tried to get level before the break.

However, after the interval Causeway increased their lead when David Plinston got free on the left flank and his low drive was parried away by keeper Jon Pugh – it fell invitingly for Carl Hind and he took his chance with a tap in at the far post to put Causeway into a 2-0 lead within five minutes of the re-start.

Westfields were then gifted an own-goal on their 43rd birthday when Danny Cox failed to deal with a long clearance by Westfields’ keeper Jon Pugh and when put under pressure by Daryl Addis, Cox lobbed the ball over his own keeper to bring Westfields back into the game.

Then in the 57th minute, Westfields pulled level when Paul Casey hit over a fierce free kick and Ashley Day raced in to head home the ’ equaliser from six yards.

This goal signalled the Westfields upsurge and the home team pushed forward in a bid to snatch all three points.

In the 75th minute Westfields’ leading goalscorer Daryl Addis pounced in the goalmouth to stab the ball home after good work by teenagers Sam Harrison and Jamie Addis.

Westfields then almost added a fourth goal when Addis found himself in front of goal but Joel Skeldon in the Causeway goal saved brilliantly to deny the Westfields’ striker.

Causeway were not out of it yet and Jon Pugh produced a fine save at the foot of his post from a stinging shot by Danny Priest.

Westfields deserved their birthday win with a hard working second-half display in driving rain to record their first MFA league double of the season.

The Herefordshire Premier Division team did not play as their scheduled game at Ross Town was cancelled as Ross have withdrawn from the league. On Saturday they go to Rocester in the league (3pm). he Herefordshire League side entertain Pegasus on Saturday in the HFA Charity Bowl second round (2pm).
