‘Lewd’ roadside activities curbed

A lay-by on the busy A49 near Leominster with a growing reputation for sleazy after dark activities has been the focus of a determined clean-up campaign.

Work to prevent “lewd practices” at this spot just north of the town has just been completed as a result of joint efforts through the PACT (Partners And Communities Together) process in North Herefordshire.

Clearing small trees and shrubs has effectively removed what was seen as a blot on the landscape.

The Park Farm lay-by became the subject of complaints earlier this year from locals and passing motorists.

Reports about men visiting the site – particularly at night – were raised with PACT.

The Leominster Rural policing team, including PC Andy Varden and CSO Zoe Brown, made regular checks at the site to deter “annoying or lewd practices”.

However, it became evident that a more far-reaching solution was required, said a police spokesman.

The problem centred on a large embankment between the lay-by and the main A49 planted with thick vegetation.

Andrew Brett, environmental delivery co-ordinator for Amey, has been credited with some “excellent work” in transforming the area.  “Almost overnight, the problem vanished,” reported a police spokesman.

“Those stopping in the lay-by for a break now can rest, safe in the knowledge that their break will not be disturbed by unwelcome attention.”

Sergeant Mike Doolan said: “This lay-by on the outskirts of town was becoming a blot on the landscape and required prompt action to remedy the situation.”
