Hereford United boss John Trewick says he is working hard to bring in a striker before the Bulls’ League Two campaign kicks off against Morecambe on Saturday.
United go into the clash with the Shrimps on Saturday with just two recognised strikers in the form of Leon Constantine and Lee Morris.
Manager Trewick has revealed that he is currently engaged in talks to bring another forward to Edgar Street but admits the chances of signing a player before the weekend are remote.
“There is still room for one more striker and that’s my priority,” he told the club website.
“We’d love to get a striker in before the Morecambe game, but we do have until the end of August and we won’t panic.”
“There are irons in the fire, we’ll be working hard to get someone in; however I’d say it’s unlikely rather than probable that someone arrives in time for Saturday.”
Trewick has been more successful elsewhere in the transfer market, however, signing former Northern Ireland Youth International James McQu-ilkin and Newcastle United midfielder Jonathan Godsmark in the last week.
McQuilkin has been on trial at Hereford for the past three weeks and has earned a one year contract with the Bulls.
The 20-year-old midfielder started his football career at West Bromich Albion but has recently been playing for the Czech Republic club FC Tescoma Zlin.
Godsmark, meanwhile, joins the Bulls from the Newcastle United on a six month loan deal.
The 19-year-old signed his first professional contract with Newcastle 18 months ago and was named in the Magpies first team squad last season.
McQuilkin came on as a second half substitute against Walsall, who beat the Bulls 1-0 in their final pre-season friendly.
Leon Constantine was the first to get a shot on target but his fierce drive was stopped at the near post by Saddlers goalkeeper Clayton Ince.
Constantine also set up a chance at half-time for former Shrewsbury winger Marc Pugh who sent a 20-yard drive wide of the post.
Down at the other end, goalkeeper Adam Bartlett came to Hereford’s rescue when he palmed a shot from Matt Richards away for a corner. Walsall, howeve,r notched the winning goal in the 40th minute through Stephen Roberts, who nodded the ball into the net after it had bounced back off the bar from a header by Dwa-yne Mattis.
After the break play switched from end to end, though Walsall should have doubled their score in the 73rd minute when Sam Parkin broke clear of central defender Keith Lowe.
But the former Luton Town marksman fired wide of the target from just inside the penalty area and the scoreline finished 1-0 to the visitors.
