There’s a chance to visit several historic mills in North Herefordshire this weekend.
As part of National Mills Weekend, Arrow Mill at Arrow Green, near Kingsland, will be open to the public from 11am to 2pm on Sunday.
Probably the best mill in Herefordshire, this is a large 17th century timber-framed building with a low breast-shot waterwheel, which should be turning.
The mill’s 19th century machinery, mostly of iron, is still in place, as are three pairs of millstones.
Mortimer’s Cross Mill will also be open that day from 10am to 4pm, when its waterwheel will be turning, although it will only be corn-grinding in the final hour.
The sole workable water-powered corn mill in the county, it dates from about 1750. The external breast-shot waterwheel and machinery were replaced a little over 100 years later.
Court of Noke Mill, near Staunton-on-Arrow, is open from 10 am to 4pm, while in the village Staunton Mill may be visited between 10am and 5pm. Donations will go to Staunton church.
