Touching tributes to burns victim

Distraught messages and flowers have continued to appear outside the Leominster shop of murdered pawnbroker George Black, as well as a photograph showing his “Geordie smile”.

A framed picture has been placed in the window of the Corn Street business which was run by Mr Black for a number of years.

Mr Black, 41, suffered severe burns at his property in The Square at Bucknell on December 8, and died in hospital at Liverpool two days later.

One message outside his shop states:  “The town will never be the same without your Geordie smile”.

Sylvia Marie Smith, in her 20s, was also burned in the incident and is said to be in a stable condition in hospital.

In a moving message from his parents, Mr Black was said to have been “taken away from us in the most horrific way”.

The tribute adds: “we can’t begin to imagine your terror or fear you felt that night, we are all reliving it in our heads every moment, nobody deserved this horrible nightmare.”

Two men, Robert William James Field and Gareth Edward Powell, both of The Grove, Shobdon, Leominster, were remanded in custody until February 16 when they appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court on Friday.

They are jointly charged with murdering Mr Black between December 7 and 11 and arson at his home on December 8 with intent to endanger the life of Sylvia Marie Smith.
