A rat? Wasn’t one of ours, say principal

Pop group UB40 had a problem with it when they sang: “There’s a rat in me kitchen – what am I gonna to do?”

Last week Herefordshire Council was faced with a similar dilemma, when “Ratty” was spotted by students using the city’s Blackfriars Street kitchens for catering lessons – and the pest controllers had to be called in.

“The sighting was not conclusive, but a single rat was reported by Herefordshire College of Technology students using our premises,  which are largely wooden and go back to the 1930s,” said a council spokesman.

No more sightings

“Pest Control blocked entrances and exits the rat may have used and put bait under the floorboards, but there were no further sightings and classes are back to normal.”

College principal Ian Peake confirmed a rat had been reported. “The rat was not one of ours, and the building was cleared for use and students allowed back after a week, during which alternative arrangements were made on campus,” Mr Peake said.
