A 19-year-old man died after the car he driving was involved in a collision with an articulated lorry at the junction of Martins Way with the A438 in Ledbury late on Monday night. The 63-year-old lorry driver was treated at Hereford County Hospital for bruising.
An ambulance service spokesman said: “The lorry driver had pain in his lower back. Crews treated him at the side of the road and immobilised him with a spinal board and neck collar. He was taken by land ambulance to Hereford County Hospital.
“Despite the best efforts of the ambulance crews, nothing could be done to save the car driver, and he was confirmed dead at the scene.”
The crash occurred at 11.33pm. Police are appealing for witnesses. They say: “A Ford Fiesta driven by a 19-year-old male was emerging from Martins Way on to the A438 when it was in collision with a Volvo articulated lorry travelling along the A438 towards Gloucester.
The Fiesta driver received fatal injuries.”
The road was closed for several hours while police examined the scene.
The coroner has been informed. A post-mortem examination will be carried out and an inquest is expected to be opened and adjourned later in the week.
Police are keen to speak to anyone who saw the collision or who may have seen the Fiesta in Martins Way or the Volvo lorry on the A438 before the crash.
