Town councillors at Leominster are treading carefully over a matter that is causing some growls of protest.
Due to popular demand, allotment holders are being allowed to take their dogs with them to the Ginhall Lane site, though the decision is not universally acceptable.
At their meeting last week, town councillors discovered the new moves were for a trial period lasting until March 2009. Letters of explanation will be going out to allotment-holders and feedback from them is to be collated during that time.
A success story for the town council, the allotments were opened in a blaze of glory by garden guru Monty Don two years ago and have become a big hit in the community.
But the question of whether dogs can accompany their owners to the plots is proving to be a contentious issue.
Town councillors were told that pets have to be kept under control on the allotments, but among the 50 holders, two have registered their disapproval for having dogs on the site.
The trial period continues until March, and allotment-holders will be required to sign up for a fresh contract in April.
