Life-savers commended for bravery

A plucky policeman and two members of the public have been commended for their bravery which saved a man’s life.

Sgt Alex Warner of Ross-on-Wye Division received a Divisional Commendation for ‘meritorious and outstanding service’ at a ceremony held at Hereford Town Hall, after he prevented a man from jumping off a bridge near Symonds Yat earlier this year.

Sgt Warner responded to an incident on February 18, after police received a report that a man was standing by Huntsham Bridge on the River Wye, with weights tied around his legs. Intelligence suggested the man might have serious domestic, emotional and mental health issues.

The man ran off with the weights when Sgt Warner approached him and appeared intent on jumping into the river. The policeman rugby tackled the man but struggled to restrain him because of his size and strength.

Two passers-by then stepped in and between them they were able to apply an Emergency Restraint belt, carried in the police car, despite the man struggling violently.

Speaking at the commendation ceremony Chief Constable, Mr Paul West said: “Police officers often have to do dangerous things in the service of the public and have to show a huge range of attributes. These include bravery, compassion, leadership, sensitivity, investigative skills, outstanding professionalism and tenacity. Many officers may just tell you ‘It’s all in a day’s work’ but I know that when they go home each day, they’ve done something special.”

He also paid tribute to the support staff and members of the public.

The two passers-by received High Sheriff’s Awards for their part in the incident.
