Tribute has been paid to a Leominster police officer for his efforts in dealing with worrying incidents involving large groups of youths in the town.
At a commendation ceremony in Hereford Town Hall, West Mercia’s Chief Constable, Paul West, awarded PC Paul O’Reilly with a Divisional Commendation for his dedication and commitment to local policing in Leominster, and for service to the local community in reducing levels of anti-social behaviour.
In December 2006, local people were becoming increasingly concerned as the town continued to suffer from disorder caused by local youths.
PC O’Reilly gathered intelligence on those responsible and, through the use of a dispersal order and warning letters with parental involvement, the problem began to ease.
He followed this up with Acceptable Behaviour Contracts for some and brought four persistent offenders to court, where they had ASBOs awarded against them in July 2007 and in February 2008.
The officer, who has been instrumental in introducing alcohol-free zones in specific parts of the town centre, has helped to achieve a “large decrease” in levels of anti-social behaviour, and in calls to police.
Those who attended the presentations in Hereford heard that PC O’Reilly’s work is highly regarded by the local community, and that he has made a major contribution in enhancing community safety.
Officers, support staff and others were presented with a range of awards by Mr West to mark the “excellent, outstanding or courageous service” they have provided.
He said: “Police officers often have to do dangerous things in the service of the public and have to show a huge range of attributes. These include bravery, compassion, leadership, sensitivity, investigative skills, professionalism and tenacity.
“Many officers may just tell you ‘It’s all in a day’s work’ but I know that when they go home each day, they’ve done something special.”
Chair of the county Police Board, Councillor Bernard Hunt added: “I am struck by the modesty of those who receive these awards, but behind the modesty is courage and bravery.”
