A plea from the landlord of a Hereford pub to vary his bail conditions to enable him to run a adjoining coach and taxi business fell on deaf ears at Hereford Magistrates Court last week.
Under current conditions Nicholas Maddy, 41, of the Bridge Inn, Michaelchurch Escley, who previously pleaded not guilty to grievous bodily harm on Journal sales executive Simon Baldwin, is only allowed to enter Karlo’s public house in Widemarsh Street between the hours of 6.30pm and 6am, and not to enter the offices or car park of the Journal, on the opposite side of the road, at any time.
At a hearing at Hereford Magistrates Court on Monday July 7, defence solicitor Neil Coulson said the conditions were “unnecessary and unworkable”, and a change would not impact upon court proceedings in any way.
For the prosecution, Emily Lemham said the original bail conditions were intended to prevent Mr Maddy from entering Widemarsh Street or Newtown Road, the location of both Karlo’s and the Journal offices.
She said: “In my view, the previous conditions made by the court are not clear and have left far too much scope for problems.”
After considering the plea, chairman of the Bench Sonia Roberts said that the current bail conditions would remain unchanged.
