Talent contest funds Borneo trip

North Herefordshire’s got talent – could it be you?

That’s the question posed by 16-year-old Katie Jackson and her mother, Jackie, who are organising a competition to find the best on-stage performer in the area.

A Wigmore High School student, Katie is heading off to Borneo next year for the journey of a lifetime with Herefordshire Expedition Group in partnership with Raleigh International. But first she has to raise more than £2,000 in order to take part in what is certain to be a challenging journey across Sabah, an exotic state in Malaysia.

This weekend, those aged between five and 17 who are bidding for North Herefordshire’s top talent title will be able to strut their stuff on stage at Kingsland Village Hall, where auditions are to be held on Sunday between 10am and noon.

Successful applicants – including singers, dancers, musicians and stand-up comedians – will be taking part in a competition in the village hall on Saturday, June 28.

As for Katie herself, she hopes to be joining others for an expedition which will take the intrepid party on a trek through the rainforest to live and work in a remote village, where they will take part in a community project such as creating irrigation systems, helping to construct a school building or teaching English to children.

The team will then undertake an adventure project, hiking up Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in South East Asia, and finally taking part in a conservation project. This involves staying with a local community that runs an ecologically sustainable tourist project, and visiting an orangutan rehabilitation centre.
