Scout hut in line for revamp

Ledbury Scout Hut is in line for a major revamp, costing about £10,000.

Extensive fundraising efforts are under way, and grants are being sought. So far about £4,000 has been raised.

The main concern is the outdated and inefficient heating system. The hut is often very cold, and is no fun in winter for the youngsters and the leaders.

The hut is used by Cubs, Scouts, Explorer Scouts and the Rainbows (a group for girls before they go up to Brownies).

Secretary Jackie Tweedale said: “Our heating system at present consists of two very large, antiquated gas heaters.

“We want to replace them with an electric wall heating system and install hot water in the kitchen and toilets.

“The heating system no longer works, and trying to get the heaters to turn on can be a mammoth task.

Sometimes they switch on easily, and at other times nothing happens.

The hut can get very cold, and it is no fun in the winter for the boys or the leaders.

“Because the heaters are so large, they get hot, and although we have a guard around them they still cause concern because they are at floor level.

“We also have safety concerns in case someone were to fall against one accidentally. Fortunately, that hasn’t happened yet.
