See what life is like on the farm

A better bit of butter – just like granny used to make – will be on the menu at Marston Court Farm in Pembridge this weekend when the farm throws open its doors to the public.

It will be a family affair for the open day on Sunday, June 1, when the Williams family all answer the call to show what’s really involved in running a farm, as well as a bit of ‘mucking about’ all round!

The family will be spreading the load, so to speak, with stalwart of the family, Granny Williams, keeping everyone in check.

Jill Williams said: “Granny Williams will be in charge of the butter-making, she’s 97 years old and she’s the one who knows her butter and how to use the machine. We hope visitors will have a go and then take a little pat of their own butter home with them.”

Roger Williams and his family have been farming the land at Marston Court for many years and they hope that this year’s open day will be as successful as last year, when over 400 people turned up.

Any proceeds raised on the day will be donated to the Charles Renton Unit.

Organised nationwide by the LEAF organisation (Linking Environment and Farming), the annual farm open day is intended to show people how produce gets to the supermarket shelf.

At Marston a nature walk has been organised, young farmers will be dancing with wheelbarrows and there will be apple pressing, weaving, sheep-shearing demonstrations, lamb-feeding, quizzes about guessing weight of eggs, hand-raised pork pie demonstrations and butter-making.

Refreshments are available throughout the day including a pig roast at 1pm.

The open day is at Marston Court Farm, Pembridge, between 11am and 5pm.
